Looking Back on Summer 2019

Blog: Looking back on Summer 2019

Autumn half term marks the end of Extreme Adventure’s main outdoor events season, and as a team we are collectively catching our breath and reflecting on seven months of intense activity which has seen us travel the length and breadth of the UK, and into Europe on several occasions.

After the scorching temperatures of 2018 in total contrast this year’s summer was a wet and windy one. Soft ground makes life easier when you’re hammering in stakes and course markers, but that’s the only advantage. Periods of heavy and prolonged rainfall left many venues soggy, at best. We were lucky that over the season only a handful of events had to be rearranged; but for the charity organisers affected it was a hard decision to take, especially when so much time and effort has gone into the planning, and supporters have been fundraising towards a particular date.

The closest call was arriving on site at 6am during a thunderstorm and sitting anxiously tracking the Met Office radar, watching the storm move away in time to get the event set up and underway. Which we did, on time. It wasn’t the only time we put our faith in the Met’s forecasts and radar, and to be fair they didn’t get it wrong once. Something to take confidence from for the future!

So the summer’s behind us, but we don’t go completely into hibernation over the winter. This month marks the start of something new for the Extreme Adventure team with the launch of our new event package, Frosty 5k. This winter-themed fun run is providing event organisers with an alternative option to the Santa Run, and an opportunity to capitalise on the post-Christmas enthusiasm to get fit. Events are scheduled from late November to March.

As for summer 2020, the events diary is looking busy already – with Bubble Rush 5k set to visit more locations than ever before and enquiries coming in from event organisers across the country.

So the quiet season isn’t going to last too long; which is just the way we like it!
