Restrictions on mass gatherings are still currently in force and like everyone in the live events sector we are waiting for guidance on when events can re-start.
It is now more than 100 days since the UK went into ‘lockdown’ to help control the spread of COVID-19, and it’s been a very strange and challenging time for everyone. Although restrictions are now being eased, it’s clear that it’s going to be some time before we really feel like life is getting back to some kind of normality.
When lockdown started we were hopeful that some ‘mass gatherings’ would be happening again by July. But they’re not! We are waiting for the Government to give us a timetable for restarting, and to tell us what form of ‘gatherings’ will be permitted.
We have been using the time to study what has been happening in other countries around the world – to see how they are getting things going again. Their experience is helping us to plan and prepare restarting our events. There have been some very imaginative approaches by retailers, sports venues and local authorities to managing everything from check-in queues to the layout of temporary toilets; all aspects of events that need to be considered in a new way from now on. Outdoor events may carry a lower risk of COVID-19 transmission, but we still need to take every precaution to keep our staff, volunteers and participants safe. But it can be done!
Excitingly, in several countries mass participation events are re-starting, including Germany and the Republic of Ireland. So we hope it won’t be too much longer before we can too. When we do get the green light we want everyone taking part to feel confident that we have taken all the necessary steps to ensure the event is as safe as possible.
As members of the National Outdoor Events Association we have been able to access up to date advice and information, guidance and best practice for mass participation events. Although we only recently signed up to NOEA the insights and advice provided have been invaluable. And it’s reassuring to know there are others ‘out there’ who share our experiences, concerns and determination to get going again. As soon as we receive guidance and a timetable for events restarting in the UK we will be ready.
